Yak Tour Itinerary

day 1 ARRIVAL & FLIGHT TO ULGII

Your safety and health is our highest priority and therefore we are applying and respecting the newest COVID-19 hygiene standards at all times. After landing (ARRIVAL DAY) you’ll be picked up by one of our Followthetracks/SIXT staff members - simply look out for the sign in the arrival hall. You’ll be brought to a 3* hotel in Ulaanbaatar and handed out a local SIM card with call and internet package. Before the road adventure starts, we will not only explore Ulan Bator, the vibrant capital of Mongolia, but also dive into your own camera gear and prepare you for the upcoming photography days. The next morning (DAY 1) you will fly out to Ulgii, Western Mongolia. No worries, the flight is already included in the price and tickets will be pre-arranged.

day 2-3 ALTAI NATIONAL PARK

Your Mongolia adventure starts in the high mountains of the Altai - more specifically: on the Tavan Bogd glacier. Only accessible between May and September, you’ll visit the Altai National Park, overlook the mountain range all the way to Russia and China. It’s an intense start into your journey but also the most scenic for sure.

day 4 ULGII CITY

After your trip to the Altai National Park, you will return to the town of Ulgii. The fifth most populated city in Mongolia and also the capital of the Bayan-Olgii is home to the Eagle Hunters and Ethnic Kazakhs. Located on river Hobda, it offers small local markets and restaurants and if you want, you can climb a few stairs to get the perfect overview of the city from a mountain close by.

day 5 UUREG LAKE

Welcome to the Uureg lake for your 5th day of your adventure through Mongolia! A salt lake located 100km away from Ulaangom, the capital of Uvs province. This unique place inhabits typical species of the Eurasian steppes such as Red foxes and Pallas’s Cats. Once you see it from the mountain pass, you can also spot the mountains in Russia already. Take a break down by the lake, enjoy the fresh air and incredible views.

day 6 ALTAN ELS SAND DUNE

It's time to discover the lakes and treasures of this almost secret part of Mongolia - no tourists go there, so this is where your wild heart will love it the most. Along the way you will pass also Altan Els, the northernmost sand dunes on the planet and home to dozens of wild life species, undisturbed and truly wild.

day 7 DELGERMORON RIVER

The northern part of Mongolia holds even more surprises for you. Have you ever watched The Grand Tour Mongolia episode? Yep, that’s where you are about to go. Spectacular mountain views along river Delgermoron, your place to hike a couple of peaks and to get excited for the last big stretch of your journey.

day 8-10 KHUVSGUL LAKE

You reached the northernmost point of your journey - the majestic Khuvsgul lake which is is the largest freshwater lake in Mongolia by volume and second largest by area holding 2% of the world's fresh water. Rest around the "Younger sister of Lake Baikal" and enjoy the scenic views over one of Mongolia's most beautiful places. This is the “vacation” part of your trip if you want - or you go and explore the National Park up north!

day 11 AMARBAYASGALANT MONASTERY

On your way back to Ulaanbaatar, you will visit the Amarbayasgalant Monastery - one of the three largest Buddhist monastic centers in Mongolia. It was built during 1727-1736, in the honour of Undur Gegeen Zanabazar, the first Bogd, Buddhist leader of Mongolian Buddhism, sculptor, and painter. Immerse yourself in the green hills surrounding the monastery and become one with nature.

day 12-13 ULAN BATOR & DEPARTURE

Even the most amazing trip will eventually come to an end, so visit Ulaanbaatar again - or ask us to extend your trip: we have plenty of more things for your to do and places to visit! A SIXT / Follow The Tracks staff member will pick you up at your hotel on the day of departure and will bring you safely to the airport.
